If you have done any amount of sifting through my catalogue of jams, you'll notice that pretty much every bass tone is DIRTY. The way that I've traditionally crafted these tones is with 2 amps.
THE OLD RIG....
For a long time I used 2 Ampeg 8x10 Classic cabs powered by 2 different amps- an Ampeg SVT3Pro and a Peavey 5150. In 2011 digital modeling got pretty good, so I paired down to a POD HD Pro and a stereo 1500 watt Carvin power amp feeding just one cab. Even though that saved considerable size and weight, it was still pretty beefy to haul around. I later tried the Darkglass B7K, which sounded pretty good, but it's in a pedal format, and still needed an amp. What I reeeeeally wanted was a single, small amp with heaps of power, that delivers piles of grind, while still keeping tight and articulate.
Much to my stokedness the Wounded Paw Bass701 showed up in my FB feed about a month ago AND.. It's made right here in Toronto. The Bass701 is a powerful, compact bass amp with a TON of highly customizable overdrive. The Bass701 achieves this with an innovative and unique 6 band, multi-band overdrive module in the preamp section. It allows you to TOTALLY tailor the gain to your taste. The amp delivers all the grind you desire via a very loud, super articulate 700 watt power section.
The Bass701 seems like mad science but is actually a natural evolution for Wounded Paw. It started with their first pedal released, the Attack Goat bass fuzz, about 8 years ago, through to the Battering Ram overdrive+fuzz and on to the 701's pre-amp which WP first started prototyping 4 years ago. Preston himself (Wounded Paw's designer / builder) has been playing live with versions of the full bass amp for the last 3 years.
If you love dirty, but smooth upper mids, as well as tight, powerful articulation, I highly suggest taking this amp for a spin. The amp will be available for testing / sampling at Paul's Boutique in Toronto all afternoon on Saturday June 25th 2016. Preston should be around to answer any questions you might have about the amp's unique design and tone shaping options.
