the 50yr old "BARITONE GUY" on the internet

Baritone, baritone baritone... What are we doing with the those baritones? Do we even have a clue?

Intentions Back in 2014 The Bunn began musing on doing “band” type music without a band. The Venns EP “Red Carpet” was released a year prior with significant success and was proof as to how little equipment and finances were needed to play the music game. Leading with Foreigns, The Bunn felt things out and released a few demo singles between 2014 and 2016, finally completing a 6 song EP “metropolitan” in the spring of 2016.

Distractions
Through the early exploration of this new solo creator path, The Bunn launched a “Bunn” Website as the central location to these new musings. Lots of questions and confusion around the “baritone thing” popped up, initially in the Toronto music scenes that Bunn participated in, so The Bunn began blogging about it trying to dispel the mysteries.

In 2016, the Bunn officially started a YouTube channel. Reason 1. To get better at video for music video ambitions. Reason 2. To better address the baritone topic, and related low-tuning mysteries.

By the end of 2021, the Bunn found himself way off course from the initial ambition of music writing and producing. He had run aground focusing for too long on the Baritone topic. The “baritone thing” had become completely exhausted. Any motivated individual could achieve great success in the baritone stuff in a quick binge of past Bunn videos.

Surprises
Because Bunn music samples were always used in the baritone demos, the videos helped to grow interest in the music. The amount of outside interest in Bunn’s music was actually quite surprising. Having been wrapped up in the baritone topic, there was never any evaluation of listenership, streams or sales. It was only in the summer of 2021 that any of that was considered, and it was surprising enough to really “sober up” on the reality of it.

Reframing
The catch in all of this however was a looming 50th birthday. Most people who say “age is just a number” are young folks. There is a lot of stuff swimming around in your head when you are about to make a major change and that change involves something that seems super risky. The anxiety around all of that really compounds at 50. Lots of what-ifs.

One thing about getting older, we come to know that the feeling of regret due to not even trying, is far worse than trying and failing, where tying is almost always the better option.

Another thing about escalating in age is that we tend to settle into our barriers and excuses. We have stories that we tell ourselves as to why we can’t do or achieve things, but on the other side of the coin, we have a life of experience that helps us to do everything better, to learn new things faster.

Let’s make peace with ourselves, get clear on what we want, and get it together so that we can start walking our path.
