Decisions for SUPER LOW • SWTB010

“What strings should I use for my super-low tuning?” In the words of Chad Woods “ya gotta experiment and have fun!”.

Hopefully this guide will get you thinking about how to narrow down the details in choosing strings for your own personal needs.

A note on set-up:
At baritone obsessed (private FB group), we see a lot of people sharing problems with playability and performance with an emphasis on the strings. Two things are often at work.

1. The person is attempting to achieve extreme results with an inadequate scale length.

2. If the Scale is in the right zone, the instrument is not set up at all. Nut, action, straightness and fret level.

A note on Drop tuning
D down to A - strings 1 through 5 Are completely in standard range. It’s only once we go down to G that the rest of the guitar begins to need quite a bit more help if you want to keep the string gauge moderate.

What kind of feel do you like?
• XL 13 to 15 lbs
• L 15 to 17 lbs
• M 17 to 20 lbs
• H 20 to 25 lbs

What kind of tone do you like?
• Dead
• Dark
• Medium
• Bright

Round wound and chrome is dark
Nickel is in the middle
Stainless is bright
Hybrid material strings require experiment
Really heavy can be dark, dead and lack sustain
Light can be brighter but also lack sustain if below tension.

What level of skin oil do you have?
• Oily
• Average
• Dry

Carbon steel will corrode (dry skin only)
Nickel and Stainless will last a little longer (dry and average moisture skin)
Coated strings like Elixir and Cleartone will last longer (oily / sweaty skin)

How long is your guitar?
• 26.5”
• 27”
• 27.75”
• 28”
• 28.625”
• 29.625”
• 29.75”
• 30”

What is your tuning?
• Drop D or standard (recommended scale 24.75” / 26.5”)
• Drop C or standard or drop (recommended scale 25.5” / 26.5”)
• Drop B or standard or drop (recommended scale 26.5” / 27”)
• Drop A or standard or drop (recommended scale 27” / 27.75”)
• Drop G or standard or drop (recommended scale 28” / 28.625”)
• Drop F or standard or drop (recommended scale 28.625” / 29.75”)
• Drop Low E or standard or drop (recommended scale 29.75” / 30”)

You were hoping that in going super low, you’d have an epic, sub-bass, wall of sonic destruction... But.. in reality it sounds like a skid of wet cardboard.

Try to look at a bass tone with 3 points of focus.
• The bass itself
• Controlling the bass tone
• Shaping the bass tone

The Bass / Sound Source

You can address the bass for your super low tuning 3 different ways
• An actual bass tuned an octave below (Dingwall, ESP/LTD, Brice)
• Octave down FX on a regular bass / guitar (The Drop, Octave pedal, VST)
• MIDI virtual bass (Eurobass)

I use an actual bass tuned an octave below for both recording and live. And that’s what we’ll be focusing on today.

Using an actual bass tuned an octave below an already low baritone can be tough when you are in G, F# or F.. As we know with 7 and 8 string guitars, adding more and bigger strings to a regular bass isn’t going to help us. We need more scale length.

Just the same as guitar, the bigger the strings, the duller the tone and less sustain. Unlike guitar, we have wayyyy fewer options for extended scale basses to match our super low guitars. If you watched the “Bass for Baritone” video, you already know most of the options.

Our goal is to get enough scale without having to have super insane strings to get as “piano” of a low note as possible.

I’m using the Dingwall Combustion 5 String. I really don’t need the 5 strings, but the fan on this fretboard goes to 37” on the low side. For my preference, it’s not quite long enough, but it’s all I can muster. I use Kalium .176 to .059 Stainless Steel strings. I can’t recommend these strings enough. They help immensely in the tone and tension. And while they are very expensive, they last FOREVER.

I tune to G Standard. The main reason I don’t tune to F# or F is because I am very unhappy with the bass performance an octave down that step and a half or full step lower. It makes a massive difference. I do make music in Bass IV E, but for that I use a bass guitar in unison.

Controlling the Bass Tone
Bass is generally a tumultuous instrument in a mix (recorded or live). This is the case for almost EVERYONE. But when the tuning is way lower, the tension a bit sloppier, and the strings are slightly too huge, it triples the challenge in getting a solid, clear “piano-like” bass tone. The main points of that challenge being - sustain, even note dynamics and clear low-end that doesn’t eat your whole mix with hungry sub-bass.

My pal Nick Hill, runs a channel about mixing metal and the magic of the Helix. His mixes are SLICK! you can listen to what I'm talking about on his new EP - Ample Chattels. Nick doesn’t tune SUPER LOW... (C or B usually), but the challenges with bass are VERY similar. I asked Nick about working with bass and what drives him nuts about it

Check out Nick's channel, grab his EP, there's a ton of gold in what he does. https://youtu.be/KgFpaxAAej8

Bass Control Philosophy
We can control the bass (a.) before we hit the amps (b.) in the amps (c.) after the amps. I find it best to do a little at each stage rather than doing a lot in a single place. But sometimes, we’ll still do a lot... It’s a tricky instrument.

Shaping the Bass Tone
I go for a tone that is dirty in the higher frequencies and clean in the lows. No matter if I’m in the DAW, or on a stage with real amps, the concept will be the same. I don’t always use 2 amps to get there though. In the past, for live, I’ve used a dual amp rig, a single modeler, dual path patch rig, the DarkGlass, the ODB-3, and currently use the Wounded Paw Bass701 for live.

There are TONS of ways to achieve a similar sound to this one. For this example I’m using a dual amp tone that I build in the DAW with 2 amp VSTs, 2 IRs, and then a few dynamics and EQ VSTs

Right off the top, make sure both tracks are 100% mono

Walk-through / build - Clean side
Cut subs / shape mids / cut top
Tame dynamics
Amp and amp settings
Cab and mic IR
Cut amped subs / smooth mids / cut top

Walk-through / build - Dirty side
Cut all lows / specify mids / cut all top again
Amp and amp settings
Cab and mic IR
Cut all lows / specify mids / cut all top again

The focus in all of this is the idea that drives the process. More importantly, I hope you are inspired and motivated to develop your own process.

Cheers!
Bunn
Bunntag:thebunn.ca,2005:Post/57620462019-05-21T00:34:14-04:002019-06-09T17:38:49-04:00Avoid MUDDY low tuning • SWTB008 (Now with the 411!)

At first, super low tuning can be a challenge. It is a common misconception that a low tuned guitar is about more bass. It can be, but in most situations the additional bass is a huge problem.

We are using plugins for this example, but the same ideas apply with real amps or hardware modelers.

The Goal - pronounced high mids, tight bottom and great tuning. even dynamics but responsive and richness.

1. Guitar.
For a gain tone, humbucker equipped guitars are generally going to be the least challenging to get a good chunk with low noise.

New strings (unless you are intentionally going for an old string sound). I did video on strings. They are not all created equally, different strings can make a huge difference.

Enough scale length for your tuning will allow you to be in tune, up the neck and keep the string gauge lower. Keeping the gauge down is generally going to afford you a bigger tone, with better sustain and a snappier attack.

2. Amp & Cab
Before you think about pedals or post FX, nail the amp down. Select an amp that gives you the character that you are looking for. It's best to start with everything set to 5 or “noon”. Try this amp with as many cabs as possible. The cab is a gigantic part of the tone and often overlooked.

For heads, I tend to have the best luck with high gain, 6L6 power section amps. Usually Dual Recs and 5150s, but there are other great 6L6 amps out there. 5881 and KT88 designs also often work pretty well. EL34s usually don’t work for me, but they might work for you.

Often, I tend to go with the straight, Mesa, oversized, 4x12 and / or 2x12 with V30s. They have a big but tight sound without being dark and muddy. I find cabs by Engl and Orange extremely dark and muddy. Try a lot of cabs or IRs to develop your ears and preferences. It's always best to audition IRs in a mix. It's the only way to be sure.

3.Pedals
A TubeScreamer type overdrive is important. We don’t use any of the gain on the pedal, only a healthy dose of level - 75% to 100%, and adjust the tone to your taste. More modern overdrives provide up to double the amount of boost. If you are using modelling (hardware or VST), you can achieve this by using 2 TubeScreamer type overdrives.

The gate. You may or may not need a gate depending the the style of music you play or how much you choose to push into the amp. Personally, I need a gate, even though I REALLY dislike gates. If I push this hard into the amp, I need it.

4. Mics
The mics that seem to always work are Sure SM57s and SM58s. There are a ton of other choices, but we are going to focus on these.

These mics tend to have a decent natural low end roll-off around 90hz or so. This is helpful in taming the bottom-end. As well they tend to accentuate the upper mids, also helpful for our cause. I like the mic close to the speaker and slightly off access of the cap to tame the “scratchy” sound.

Putting your time into dreaming about more gear is time you could spend learning and experimenting with the things that you DO have, things that can make a bigger difference.

The longer you wait, the longer you will wait, and the bigger the regret. You will get to the gear you want faster by knocking out a heap of music and connecting with people through your music.

Yes, this channel talks a lot about gear, however the point is to help you solve gear problems more quickly, so that you can focus on making music. This channel is not about endlessly buying gear.

The bare minimum 5 things that we need for the pursuit of music creation is - a guitar, interface, computer, software, headphones / monitors. If you want an example of a bare minimum rig, we can do an episode on that.

We live in an amazing time! Very little is required to get a satisfiable guitar sounds and make a great recording. A guitar, laptop (pretty old ones even..) and some VSTs can get you REALLY far. The biggest things that contribute to a quality output is knowing what you are doing, and being super creative. That just takes showing up every day. Which in itself is the hardest thing to do.

All that said, I encounter an alarming number of folks who are stuck on “needing” better or more gear just to get started. They are doing nothing but surfing the internet dreaming about how “If I only had that XYZ Corporation guitar or magic box, THEN I can START making music”.

So that leads to the questions we need to ask before we think that we need more or better gear:

Do we actually have a problem, and what kind of problem is it?

Identify Problems - 3 Areas
Technical problems - eg - Poor tuning / intonation for low tuning - maybe baritone.

Pallet problems - eg - You are attempting to make really heavy music and only have clean or rock amp tones.

Workflow problems - eg - you are spending a huge amount of time everyday to set up, tweak or work around.

What is the return on investment? (ROI)
Creativity return
Does the cost and effort for this new thing actually contribute to better music making and higher creativity? How much?

Productivity return
Does it contribute to more music completion and output, more frequently?

Monetary return
If you are making music for a living (or at least seek to do so) does the thing you think you need contribute to revenue?

I hope you are making rather than waiting.
