The Original
The original demo of “Spiritual” was published to the Bunn Bandcamp just over 2 years ago in February of 2023. It was the proposed 5th piece towards the next and ever delayed Foreigns EP.
The main theme of the tune was in line with the title radiating a whimsically atmospheric intangibility. Though I felt like everything surrounding that theme was “cheap”. The surrounding riffs sounded like the wrong friends who drag you down and keep you from reaching your full potential.
Progress
After about a year of fooling around with chords and melodies, I found a progression that profoundly improved the start of the tune and expanded the harmonic movement.
While progress was certainly made, I just couldn’t figure out how to evolve the thing. I wanted to keep building in some way, while continuing to keep coming back around to what I established in the intro. A “spiritual evolution” of the theme in the piece. I didn’t know where to go, but I knew that I didn’t want to get “heavy” in the typical sense. I wanted to maintain the sense of this unseen force attempting to shape the particles of the thing we call reality.
The Answer
For the last few months, I tried everything possible other than to pull the whole thing apart. And that was exactly what I needed to do. Pull it apart entirely and identify the fundamentals of everything. The fundamental progressions, the fundamental rhythms. It was in pulling it apart completely, that I understood what it was, and where it wanted to go. It was truly a "spiritual awakening".
